How AI Assistants Are Changing the Way South Africans Buy Blinds Online

AI Shopping API for Blinds in South Africa

Buying blinds online has always required the same sequence: find a website, navigate a configurator, enter dimensions, choose a colour, fill in a form, and wait for a quote. For millions of South Africans who now use AI assistants daily, that sequence is starting to feel unnecessary.

Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings, the Garden Route's independent window covering specialist, has built a different approach. Their online shop at shop.customblinds.co.za now operates a public API that AI assistants can call directly to browse products, get live pricing, configure made-to-measure blinds, and place orders on a customer's behalf.

What the API Does

The system uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows AI assistants to call external tools and retrieve structured data in real time. A customer tells their AI assistant what they need. The AI calls the Custom Blinds API, pulls live product data and pricing, validates the configuration against real dimension limits, and returns a complete order summary with a payment link.

The whole exchange takes seconds. No website visit required. No form to fill in. The customer's AI assistant handles the entire transaction.

How AI Assistants Use It

The API exposes five tools. Three are publicly accessible without any authentication: searching the product catalogue by type and colour, retrieving live ZAR pricing for any product at exact customer dimensions, and generating a full product configuration summary. Two transactional tools require an authorised token: submitting a customer enquiry to the sales team, and creating a draft order with a Yoco payment link returned instantly.

All pricing is calculated server-side. The AI client cannot submit or manipulate prices. Every configuration is validated against the live pricing engine before an order is created, so impossible configurations, such as a width exceeding the maximum for a particular fabric, return a structured error with a clear suggestion rather than a failed order.

Why This Matters for South African Consumers

South Africa's window treatment market has long been dominated by franchise chains that prioritise showroom sales over digital convenience. The result for consumers is a slow, manual process that has changed little in twenty years. AI-assisted shopping removes that friction entirely.

Custom Blinds is the first window covering company in South Africa to offer this capability. The full documentation and API reference is available at customblinds.co.za/ai-blinds-api/.

Products Available via the API

The API covers the full range of indoor made-to-measure blinds available through the Custom Blinds online shop: roller blinds in blockout and sheer fabrics, honeycomb blinds, aluminium venetian blinds in 25mm and 50mm, aluwood venetian blinds, wooden venetian blinds, plaswood venetian blinds, bamboo venetian blinds, zebra double roller blinds, duo rollers, vertical blockout blinds, and outdoor blinds. All products are made to the customer's exact dimensions and delivered nationally across all nine provinces.

For Developers and AI Builders

The MCP server endpoint is publicly accessible at shop.customblinds.co.za/mcp using the JSON-RPC 2.0 protocol. The machine-readable manifest describing all five tools, their parameters, and response formats is available at shop.customblinds.co.za/mcp-manifest.json. Integration examples and technical documentation are published on GitHub at github.com/CustomBlinds/cb-stack-1.
